Welcome back folks, time for a new segment here at the Armory. I'll be telling you about my progress on a game as I tackle it for the first time.
Now, let's be clear, I have played Final Fantasy 6 TO DEATH but this is a whole new experience. Brave New World is just that, a new way to experience a great old classic.
Let's get to the get down, yeah?

First, let's discuss just what Brave New World is. Brave New World is a complete overhaul mod for Final Fantasy 6 created by modders BTB and Synchysi. I don't want to get into all of the specifics here, but you can check out the read me if you are curious.
The biggest changes are in the Esper system. No longer can any character equip any esper. Now, each character has restrictions on which magicite that they can equip. That means no more spamming Quick every round in the final battle, no more Ultima death squads and no more of the "each character is the same generic magic spammer".
That simple mechanic opens the floodgates in terms of character development. Now, each person feels unique and feels like they have a set role on the team. Cyan is just, just awesome and I fight with keeping him on the team at all times now.
Gau's rages have been rebalanced, so you're not looking for 6 billion of them anymore. The Veldt is now an appropriately wild area with varying and diverse encounters. Monsters are deadlier, using all the attacks and skills that they had access to originally. Ever seen a Leafer use Wind Blade when you leave Narshe the first time? You will now.
Did you ever wonder just how Locke was stealing potions from ravens? Wonder no longer. Stealing from an enemy that wouldn't be carrying anything realistically results in a vicious counter attack that will likely end you. Go ahead, try to steal from that bear if you want to.
Aside from all of that, the dialogue got a major overhaul too, to be closer to the spirit of the original. The team used the amazing Lina Darkstar translation as a source to implement some changes, but still got plenty of their own style in there too.
So far, I've played up to Doma, and I am loving it. I can't wait to get my hands on the espers and really experience the changes in this game. More to come next week. In the mean time, if you want to check it out, you can find it here.
